Christmas Trees, Fresh-Cut Greens and Poinsettias

By Cathy Hough, general manager & buyer

All of our fresh-cut Christmas trees from Windy Acres Farms in Oregon have arrived! There’s nothing quite like one of these Christmas trees. They are absolutely gorgeous: full, fresh and beautiful to look at!

For more than 25 years, Windy Acres has been our fresh-cut Christmas tree supplier because their trees are always the best. And we do our part to keep them at their peak by making a fresh cut on the tree trunk and then immediately placing them in a tree stand full of fresh water (below).

Then our staff cuts the twine that has gently kept these trees in perfect condition and voila, you have one of the best fresh-cut Christmas trees around!

Our fresh-cut Christmas trees are Grand Fir and Noble Fir.

The Grand Fir is the most fragrant of all cut Christmas trees, distinguished by its dark green long needle with silver coloring underneath. They are characteristically very full, rounded and plump in shape.

The Noble Fir is characterized by shorter, stiff needles and its branches are very sturdy, making them well-suited for decorations.

Our fresh-cut Christmas trees range from two feet to 10 feet and delivery is available.

The good news is that our fresh-cut greens are here, too! These greens are perfect for decorating and include wreaths from 10 inches to 18 inches, door charms and garland for decorating over a mantel or stairway.

Hurry in for the best selection in fresh-cut Christmas trees and greens and let the fun of the season begin!

Our poinsettias are looking great and include varieties such as traditional red and white, Silver Marble and Country Quilt, among others. Availability is limited on the unusual varieties so shop early if you are looking for something different in a poinsettia.

There are many ways to make your home “merry and bright” so do stroll our choice selection of indoor plants and home decor and gift items for ideas.

We always have a fine selection of statues (below) and indoor fountains.

Amaryllis bulbs make a nice hostess gift for partygoers this holiday season and come boxed and ready to wrap (below). This Amaryllis box contains everything you need to successfully grow an Amaryllis.

So stop in today to enjoy the spirit of this holiday season! Wishing you all the wonder & joy of the season.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching and I am reminded of all that I hold near and dear. Family, friends, life, plants, sunshine, stars, snow, the magic of the season, pets, customers, vendors, the ground we walk upon. I wish that each of you experiences a beautiful Thanksgiving and holiday season full of everything you love!

Camellia

This time of year reminds me of life… and because I know that fall is the best season for planting, I have undertaken refreshing and planting anew the very far reach of my backyard. This area has been waiting for a re-do. The huge graceful pine tree that has been there from day one has always been a focal point.

Plant now to take advantage of the best season for planting! Consult Stephanie or Steve for guidance. Their expertise will help your garden thrive.

Before

So, we began with something we already had, a pebble-topped concrete bench, at far left of the pine tree, placing gorgeous in bloom sasanqua camellias to either side of the bench. Behind it, we planted two white azaleas (pink and purple azaleas below) and heavenly bamboo to accompany an existing Japanese Maple Tree.

After

Azaleas and Camellias offer a rich diversity of flower colors as well as a gorgeous evergreen foliage. You can have the Christmasy red of Yuletide Camellias, the delicate pink of Jean May Camellias, the vibrant pink of Shi Shi Gashira Camellias, and on and on. Steve and Stephanie can tell you what your plants will need to ensure strong growth. Properly planting plants makes all the difference in the world. You need to know what amendments and soils to use to create an ideal condition for your plants.

Cyclamen (above) thrive in shade and can be paired nicely with Azaleas and Camellias. Cyclamen come in red, white pink and purple and I used to plant them around the base of the pine tree in winter. In warmer heat, I would plant Impatiens.

Now that I’ve landscaped a corner of my backyard (above), I continue to design the remaining areas and have planted the other side (below) with Coprosma ‘Mirror Plant’ and Canas. These provide a good contrast in foliage in an area that is typically dark and draw the eye to them.

Abutilon “Flowering Maple’ (below) are another prime example of a good plant for shady areas. In our garden, by the pebble-topped bench, we have one in a Talavera pot.

Abutilon add a graceful note to gardens and are available in an array of colors. When I was on my recent tour of our top-quality growers, we saw many beautiful varieties. The Marina del Rey Garden Center has a good selection of the best Abutilons (below) available.

While at Suncrest Nurseries in Watsonville, I toured an impressive operation and saw many, many beautiful plants, among them a sweet little purple cyclamen (below) that is extremely delicate and woodsy-looking.

I also saw gorgeous Yarrow (below) and rows of Cordyline and Salvias (below).

Remember, fall is the best time for planting. So, come on in, stroll our grounds, ask Stephanie or Steve for assistance, and create the wonderful garden in ground or containers that will brighten your fall, winter and spring.

Fall is For Planting

By Cathy Hough, general manager & buyer

My recent roadtrip north to visit some of our growers, among the best in the industry, proved very fruitful. At Suncrest Nurseries, I discovered row upon row of beautiful salvias in gorgeous orange (above) and pink hues. I also found an alstromeria called “Diana” (below) and saw some gorgeous camellias.

Fall is the best time to plant and the Marina del Rey Garden Center is fully stocked with shrubs, salvias, hard-to-find perennials, ornamental grasses, citrus, herbs, vegetables, camellias, and much more.

Plants that root in the ground now will take advantage of the heat leftover from summer and spread their roots more rapidly, resulting in a sturdier plant that will produce even better results in spring.

These plants in our sold section (below) will provide immediate color and texture in the landscape and continue to grow and do well into spring. Ask Steve, Stephanie or Dago for complete details on why fall is the best time for planting. They will be glad to provide expert assistance.

Now is also the perfect time to plant camellias, a popular evergreen shrub known for its delicate blossoms. Camellia flowers (below) are great for floating as a decoration in a bowl of water and have long been appreciated by gardeners worldwide.

Camellias can be seen in all their glory at Descanso Gardens and The Huntington Library Botanical Gardens. Descano is a virtual camellia and oak forest and was once the home of E. Manchester Boddy, publisher of the Los Angeles News.

Why not bring the beauty of camellias to your home landscape where you can enjoy them every day. We have a large selection of sasanquas, many in bloom now, and japonicas, which will bloom anytime between now and February.

A popular camellia for the holiday season is the red-flowered Yuletide (above). And you can create your own breathtaking display of camellia color (below) with the variety of plants available.

Ask Stephanie, Dago or Steve for camellia planting guidance. They know the best way to plant and nurture a camellia.

Now is also the time to plant cool-season vegetables, including tomatoes (below). We have an extensive selection of cool-season vegetables, so stop by to choose your plants. Our gardening experts Dago, Steve and Stephanie can help you with your selections and planting choices. Many vegetables can be planted in containers if you don’t have enough ground. Tomatoes will benefit from reflective heat from walls and will need to have as much sunlight as possible.

We offer an amazing herb selection year-round. (Below) Mojito Mint should add some razzle dazzle to your libation or culinary creation.

We are well-known for our huge selection of in-stock fountains that ranges from small to enormous, classic to contemporary. Add the charm, focal point and soothing sounds of a fountain to your landscape, balcony, patio, deck or indoors.

And if you can’t fit your new plants, soils, fountains, pots or statuary in your vehicle with the help of our friendly customer service team (below), the good news is that we deliver (below).
