Winter Gardening

By Cathy Hough, general manager & buyer

As a new year greets us, I’d like to once again thank you for making the Marina del Rey Garden Center your gardening resource. We take great pride in offering expert plant and planting guidance and superior products from the best growers and vendors.

Camellias

Year-round we offer a complete selection of plants, indoor and outdoor, fountains, containers, soil amendments, statues and home decor items designed to make your home and garden a beautiful place.

Winter needn’t be a time that takes you away from gardening. Camellias (above) are in bloom and ready to be planted. Camellias come in tree and shrub shapes with flowers reminiscent of roses. Ask Steve or Stephanie for advice on how to add one or more of these beauties to your landscape. Sometimes considered finicky, Camellias are easy to grow once you know how to care for them.

There is nothing quite like a Japanese Maple for adding variety, versatility and year-round beauty to the landscape. Watch the seasons, even in Southern California, through the lens of a Japanese Maple, and you will know why these beauties have a seat of honor in gardens around the world.

We’ve just received a delivery of citrus, ranging from lemons to limes to tangerines to oranges to¬† grapefruit, in dwarf and normal sizes. Citrus is great to have around and nothing tastes quite like your very own homegrown fruit.

Fortunately, citrus (below) can be grown in ground and in containers, making it a great plant for the garden or balconies, decks, patios and porches.

The Marina del Rey Garden Center is well known for our large in-stock selection of containers (below), fountains and statues.

And if we don’t have what you’d like in stock, we take special orders. And we deliver.

Ask Steve or Stephanie about how we can get your purchase to you via our delivery service.

Happy Holidays & A Very Merry Christmas

By Cathy Hough, general manager & buyer

Christmas Eve and Christmas arrive this week and if you’re looking for an easy last-minute gift, purchase a Marina del Rey Garden Center Gift Card. It never expires and you can select just the amount you want on the card.

Gift recipients will enjoy visiting the garden center whenever they want to discover beautiful, stunning indoor plants, home decor items, bedding plants, veggies and herbs, roses, citrus, unusual and hard-to-find perennials and much more.

Our year-round fountain collection (a sampling, below) offers something for everyone, so add one to your landscape this holiday season or surprise a loved one.

And if you’d like to freshen up your home for holiday gatherings, it’s never too late to do so, with red and white cyclamen (below) bedding plants, container plantings, fountains or new landscape plants. Ask Steve or Stephanie for assistance. They can help you bring your last-minute holiday gardens together.

Head on in now for last-minute fresh-cut greens and wreaths, poinsettias and living and fresh-cut Christmas trees, on a first-come, first-served basis.

A little over a week ago, I had the pleasure of helping friends (below) select trees for a special occasion, The Polar Express.

As always, once the trees were selected, our courteous staff prepped the trees for their ride to their destination: The Polar Express. We also offer delivery of Christmas trees and other gardening supplies. Ask for details.

Every year, we feature an impressive selection of poinsettias (below), first-come, first-served. We frequently sell out of special and unusual varieties and even your basic red poinsettia and we thank you for your continued patronage.

The beautiful poinsettias set the stage for making the sesson merry and bright and add a festive atmosphere to our indoor garden area (below), full of orchids, indoor plants, fountains, statues and home decor and gift items.

Our Noble Firs and Grand Firs come from Oregon from a grower we’ve trusted for more than 20 years. When the trees arrive from Windy Acres Farm, we make a fresh cut and place them in water to help ensure their freshness. We always have some living Christmas trees (below) too for those who favor them.

Planting a living Christmas tree might be a great way to measure a child’s growth (above) or at least a way to offer them a tree to decorate in the great outdoors, even if you live in a city.

And remember to take your party host a gift. Even family members enjoy being remembered in such a thoughtful way. Our boxed Amaryllis (below) makes a great gift. Take it to an after-Christmas party, too. Or even a New Year’s Eve party or a New Year’s Day gathering.

Orchids (below) make an exquisite gift and we have a stunning selection year-round. And, orchids are easy to care for. Ask Stephanie or Steve for the low-down on taking care of an orchid.

We also stock a year-round unrivaled selection of in-stock statues, containers and fountains. Perhaps a religious statue (below) would hold a special place in a friend’s garden. Or how about yours?

We also have other adorable items, including our Meditating Animal Collection (second photo below).

As always, thank you for visiting us on these web pages as well as in person. We appreciate your business and thank you for it. Our knowledgeable staff strives to provide you with the best in courteous service.

Happy Holidays!

The Joy of the Season

By Cathy Hough, general manager & buyer

Happy holidays everyone! I am enjoying the hustle-bustle of the season and thank you for shopping with us for your fresh-cut greens, poinsettias, living and fresh-cut Christmas trees, Marina del Rey Garden Center gift certificates and holiday gifts for party hosts, friends, neighbors and family.

We’ve had some amazing poinsettias (above), including large ones that are very attractive. Stop in today to see how you can deck your house for the holidays with poinsettias and fresh-cut greens (below).

If you’ve yet to select a Christmas tree, we have a nice assortment of fresh-cut Noble and Grand firs from Oregon. We take great pride in keeping our trees fresh. Indeed, there’s nothing quite like the aroma of a fresh-cut Christmas tree so stop in with a cup of coffee and stroll through our forest of trees (below), even if you already have one.

We deliver but just in case you want to leave right away with your tree, our staff is ready, willing and able to help you load your tree atop your car (below).

Children love to wander through our Christmas tree forest, so bring them in so that they can experience the smell of fresh-cut trees and select one for your household. Our trees come in a variety of sizes, from apartment-sized to gigantic.

Stephanie and Steve can help you determine which living Christmas tree is right for your landscape conditions. They can also provide guidance on what to plant now for quick color. The holidays needn’t be all red and white, as glorious a sight as those colors are.

We just received a shipment of fully “budded up” Camellias (below) in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors. Camellias are beautiful rose-like shrubs that come in tree and shrub shapes. Many varieties are in bloom now with many more to bloom in the coming months.

And remember that the gardener on your gift list will love having a Marina Garden Center gift certificate to use later in the year. Our gift certificates never expire and come in any amount you wish to make them.

So, enjoy the holiday season, perhaps with a Poinsettia or two for you and a friend.

Have a Holly Jolly Christmas…

By Cathy Hough, general manager & buyer

It’s definitely beginning to look a lot like Christmas and I hope you’re enjoying the fun and special times that the season brings. No matter what you celebrate, the holiday season is always a great time to give thanks for the light and love in each of our lives.

Theres nothing quite like a fresh-cut Christmas tree from Oregon. Ours are Noble Firs and Grand Firs in a nice range of sizes.

Here at the Marina del Rey Garden Center, our elves have been busy loading and delivering the gorgeous fresh-cut Christmas trees you’ve come to treasure!

Grown in Oregon, these trees are the freshest around. To ensure their freshness, we make a new cut and immerse them in water on a stand. We’re sure your season will sparkle with one of our Christmas trees (and don’t forget that we deliver!).

We have a spirited selection of gift items gardeners are sure to treasure. Reverent or playful statues make great garden accents indoors and out. And who wouldn’t want an angel in their garden!

A Marina del Rey Garden Center Gift Certificate is a great gift for gardeners and those who appreciate the beauty of a flower. MDRGC gift certificates never expire and we don’t add on any additional fees. You can also purchase them in the amount you specify.

If you have a holiday party to attend, take your party hosts a beautiful Poinsettia or Phalaenopsis Orchid (below). Or, take one to your child’s school teacher, a friend, or family as a token of appreciation a love this holiday season. People often view an Orchid as some sort of exotic and difficult to grow plant, when they really aren’t. Consult Stephanie or Steve to learn how easy Orchid care can be.

We have also just received our first shipment of the season of Cymbidium Orchids (below), a much loved and cherished plant. Cymbidiums are most frequently grown as pot plants (from small to large containers) although they can be grown in raised beds in the ground. In either case, the growing medium must be free-draining and acidic. Cymbidiums, which are grown in Japan and China, are well suited for the coastal California climate. They can tolerate considerable summer heat and winter chill. Lows of 29 degrees F and highs up to 100 degrees can be handled for short periods.

Right now is also the time to plant Garlic and Onion bulbs (below). We have just received a nice selection of bulbs for gardeners who want to get their hands dirty and plant right now. And who can resist a nice crop of homegrown garlic and onions! Let the kids do some supervised planting or take some time yourself.

The Marina del Rey Garden Center, as always, is your gardening resource. Our expert staff is on hand to provide assistance and we deliver!

Ask Steve or Stephanie about our delivery service. And stop in today to enjoy the scents and natural beauty of the season. Our fresh-cut Christmas trees, fresh-cut greens and perfect Poinsettias are here to make your holiday season merry and bright!
